AI makes learning skills all the more important ...and effective!
How an empirical study highlights the importance of cross-disciplinary skills, particularly in work and learning environments shaped by AI.
A comprehensive, empirical study conducted as part of a metacognitive research project involving approximately 30 schools, 12,000 students, and 5,000 teachers worldwide is drawing attention. We live in an era of AI, debates, and upheaval that place the human factor at the center, sometimes questioning its relevance or seeking answers regarding the unique value of the human contribution.
The study demonstrated that targeted and systematic learning training, which promotes cross-disciplinary competencies, can yield remarkable learning outcomes. Learning capacity can increase by 72% when learners consciously focus their learning, reflect on it, and engage productively with information. These are skills that AI cannot simply replace; more than that, they are abilities that ideally complement AI and generate added value.
What AI cannot simply do is replace skills in the areas of learning, such as cooperation, creativity, critical thinking, or curiosity. In the study, targeted learning interventions using daily “thinking routines” resulted in a measurable, average improvement in the following areas:
+72% in cooperation; +70% in curiosity; +69% in creative skills; +68% in critical thinking; +60% in learning engagement; and +59% in compassion and empathy.
In addition, the study also demonstrated the following effects:
· 96% of participating teachers state that metacognitive work ideally prepares learners for academic and professional success outside of school.
· 78% recognize improved reflective abilities among students.
· 71% observe improved learning autonomy.
· 85% of students claim they understand their strengths better and more clearly.
The systematic promotion and development of cross-curricular competencies is an important foundation for development and a key differentiator, especially in the age of AI.
